How the AI works.
What the AI does, what it doesn't and exactly where a human picks up. No black boxes.
What it does
It reads, classifies, and drafts.
Reads your documents.
You drop in your refusal letter and your policy documents. The AI reads it all — the excuse the insurer gave against the cover you actually paid for.
Classifies the refusal.
Our systems match your case to one of around one hundred excuse types used by insurers, from Steve's library — change in circumstances not disclosed, under-insurance, a pre-existing condition, to name but a few.
Picks the arguments.
For your excuse type, it then selects the arguments worth making, in line with the laws, rules and regulations that help you. If it needs to know something to make the right selection, it asks you — two or three questions.
Drafts the letter.
It writes a complete rebuttal letter in plain English, hyperlinked to the law and the decisions behind each point. You see the analysis first. You decide whether to send it.
What it doesn't do
Three things the AI isn't.
It doesn't give legal advice.
It gives you legal information and a letter you can choose to send. That's a different thing, and the difference matters. smarterclaims is an information service — like a published legal guide, made digital — not a solicitor advising you on your case.
It doesn't represent you.
You're not its client. Nothing is sent on your behalf. The letter goes out in your name, from you, when you decide to send it.
It doesn't replace a solicitor.
It's a digital self-help tool driven by AI that sits over our expert content. For cases that are high-value or hard-contested, you are more likely to need professional representation. If your case looks like one of these, the tool tells you, and we can introduce you to the right people.
Where the human picks up
An expert writes our content, but you hold the pen.
Steve maintains the library.
The legal thinking is human. Steve Smart documented the refusal patterns, the arguments, and the citations — and he reviews and updates them as the laws, regulations and Ombudsman decisions change. The AI applies his playbook; it doesn't invent the law.
You confirm before you pay.
You see the AI's read of your case — the refusal it found, the arguments it picked — before any money changes hands. If it's misread something, you can tell it.
You send it yourself.
The final letter is yours. You send it to your insurer in your own name. We tell you what to do next if they don't budge — including how to escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which is free to use.
Your documents
Held to do the job then deleted.
Your refusal letter and policy documents are held only for as long as it takes to run the analysis and write your letter. They're then deleted.
We don't sell your data. We don't share it with insurers. We don't use it to train external models.
The bottom line
An information service, not a law firm.
smarterclaims publishes legal know-how in a structured, AI-mediated format and writes letters you can send yourself. We are not a law firm and not a claims management company. We are not regulated by the SRA or the FCA. If your case needs representation, we'll tell you straight.
The AI is not in charge — it just delivers the know-how, reliably and cost-effectively.
We tell you when AI is involved, what it's doing, and where the human picks up. No black boxes. No "powered by AI" theatre.
